Los Angeles Turners
Community Outreach
The Los
Angeles Turners, as a 501 (c) 3 not for Profit Organization, are
supporting California Outreach
in their "Feed The Needy" program. In association with Second
Harvest Food bank and donors in Los Angeles, the LA Turners help to disburse food in different places to
help the people in our society that have fallen on hard times.
Here are photos of
some of the outreach events.
I AM ROBIN HOOD
Cultural ties between the Los
Angeles Turners and the German-American Community were strengthened
in June of 2011 when we were able to donate the use of our community
center to the Goethe International Charter School of Marina Del
Rey. Their fifth grade students wrote a play entitled I AM ROBIN HOOD – an amazing
amalgam of the Robin Hood legend and the message of loyalty and
brotherhood from the movie Spartacus. Several scenes reflected the
students’ benefit of being immerse in German language classes. The
scene in which the King of Austria had a conversation in German with
the captured Richard the Lionhearted of England who spoke English
with the assistance of a French interpreter was especially moving as
well as very funny. These multi-talented students selected the
music, wrote new words for old tunes, auditioned for parts, helped
sew costumes and paint scenery. A full week of dress rehearsing was
held at the Turner Center. The sounds of whizzing arrows and
clashing swords filled the big room. The joyful noise of 35 or so 5th
graders was beyond description.
At the end of the week, two
hundred parents, relatives and friends of the school were present at
each of the 3 actual performances, allowing the school to raise
funds for their continued existence. What a pleasure it was for
the Los Angeles Turners to be able to share in this fulfilling
community project.
Schools wishing to make use of
our Center for similar events should contact us. We welcome the
opportunity to be of support.
Japan
Help, from us to you >>>>>>>>>>
Shortly after the devastating events in
Japan on March 11th, Los Angeles Turner president, Carole
Kulzer Brennan called on the German-American community in greater
Los Angeles to Help Japan. The responses were immediate. On
Friday, April 8, 2011, she, along with Los Angeles Turner General
Manager Alexander Hast and German American League President Ellen M.
Neu presented a check from the Turner fund raising campaign to
Deputy Consul General Yusuke Shindo. Also present were Alexander Hast's
friend and Turners associate Michiya Shimizu, Sr. Vice President of Nippon
Express who graciously arranged the visit, Consul Shuichi Matsumoto
and Richard Takemori of Nippon Express. The Help Japan Drive was
lead off with an outstandingly generous gift of $5,000.00 donated by
the German
American League. The League is an affiliation of 20 Los
Angeles/Orange County clubs representing all areas of German and
Austria. The German speaking Swiss owners of
Chalet
Edelweiss and the President of the German-American School
association followed with generous gifts. Individual contributions
from people with Germanic heritage as well as from the Los Angeles
Turners themselves made up the remainder of the donation. The
reason the check was presented to the Japanese Consulate is that
100% of the donations will actually go to the victims of the
disaster.
Upon presentation of the check, Ms. Brennan
told Mr. Shindo, “We hope the compassion accompanying this gift will
aid broken spirits as well as broken things.” Mr. Shindo
acknowledged that concern from the German community within the
United States would be warmly appreciated. He also stated that
prior to his arrival in Los Angeles he worked at the Japanese
Embassy in Berlin making our connection doubly meaningful.
The Los Angeles Turners, founded in 1871,
continue with their mission to promote A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.
